MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the Twelve S rRNA type-c) is a mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the 12S ribosomal RNA gene of mitochondrial DNA. Discovered in 2015 by Dr. Pinchas Cohen laboratory at USC, MOTS-c represents a novel class of signaling peptides that originate from the mitochondrial genome.
MOTS-c research has revealed its role as a key regulator of metabolic homeostasis. Studies have documented its effects on AMPK activation, folate-methionine cycle regulation, and cellular metabolism reprogramming.
